New Delhi: Around 25 per cent of communal tensions in the country took place due to religious disputes, Minister of State for Home RPN Singh said in Rajya Sabha on Friday.
"In 2010, there were 651 communal tensions in the country and only 23 per cent of them are because of religious disputes ...In 2011, its share was 25 per cent," Singh said.
He was replying to a discussion on a private members` resolution moved by M Rama Jois (BJP), who later withdrew it.
The resolution sought to constitute a National Reconciliation Court to bring about an amicable settlement of disputes for establishing communal riot-free India.
Singh said largely social issues such as intra-religion marriage and passing comments by one to another give birth to such communal tensions, which would not be solved by setting up of such courts.
"The setting up of National Reconciliation Court would not benefit in solving all such communal problems. So, there is no need," he said.
Jois insisted on an assurance from the government that the issue would be considered in future, to which Singh said he would definitely "take note of the suggestion."
Jois in his resolution stated that communal riots take place in different parts of the country on several occasions between Hindus and Muslims causing colossal loss of life and property.
Thus, in the larger interest of the nation, it was necessary to take steps towards establishing communal riots free India.
