Age bar for juveniles will not be lowered: Krishna Tirath

New Delhi: Women and Child Development minister Krishna Tirath on Tuesday said the age bar for juveniles would not be lowered and all persons aged below 18 would be treated as children.

"The age definition for children would continue to include all citizens who have not yet reached the age of 18 years. Though the Delhi gangrape case has raised a debate, but a change in law will affect many other children as well," Tirath said here.

"We don't give those below 18 the right to vote, the minimum marriageable age for girls is 18, for boys it is even more at 21. So, when we don't give children a lot of rights till they are 18, we should also consider them children till they are 18," Tirath said.

The minister said that in a meeting which was held yesterday, several experts had also advised her against reducing the age bar.

Following the outrage over the Delhi gangrape incident in which one of the accused had turned out to be below 18 years of age, there had been demands that the law be amended.

The WCD ministry has been reviewing the Juvenile Justice Act which currently takes those below the age of 18 as children.

The WCD minister clarified that the Delhi gangrape case, in which 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally raped and assaulted by six persons in a moving bus on December 16, 2012, was already in court and her ministry's decisions were being made keeping the future in mind.

Tirath said the focus of her ministry was to provide better care to those who are lodged in juvenile homes.

She said she was considering writing to the health ministry that counsellors should be made available to children in juvenile homes to aid the reformation process.

This is the double standard of our politicians and persons holding high positions in Govt or elsewhere. After Delhi gang rape case it was Women and Child development minister Krishna Tirath who first expressed her strong will to punish the so called juvenile accused and was even of the opinion to wave off six months period for a juvenile accused to be treated as an Adult.Today the Govt is opining that reducing the upper age limit of juvenile will affect other children. What Govt and honorable minister want to say that they are more worried about the security and safety of juvenile criminals than the juvenile victims?Juveniles are raping minor girls, killing them still they are not to be punished and are at liberty to commit heinous crimes. If juvenile age is not to be reduced, a provision in juvenile justice act 2000 must be made to this effect that juveniles involved in heinous crimes like rape, murder and against the Nation will be treated and tried as adults. The heinousness or brutality of the crime committed by juvenile may be left to the discretion of the judge or juvenile justice board hearing the case.

When Indian politician will learn from history. They never think for long future. A 16 year old person can produce next generation hence they should not be treated as child. person can produce child so .

It is as was expected. Government has no will power, courage and vision to set the things right. Restraint regarding marriageable age and can-drink age is there to keep their future bright and restriction regarding voting right age is there to keep the nation`s future bright as minors are not well aware of the weapon of votes. Similarily, lowering down the age in case of heinous crimes i.e. rape,murder,anti-nation/terrorists activities and crimes by forming a gang will save the society and nation. If Krishna Teerath is setting off rights denied to the minors due to their age with the advantages i.e. exemption from punishment in heinous crimes granted to minors, she should confer the voting rights, alcohol consuming right and right to marry but save the society from such culprits. We know Government will not do anything. Dhany ho!
