Army chief issues orders for checking cyber invasion

Gen Singh has issued orders to check "cyber invasion" by restricting use of power point presentation for discussing sensitive military information.

New Delhi: Against the backdrop of incidents of hacking of defence computers, Army chief Gen Bikram Singh has issued orders to check "cyber invasion" by restricting use of power point presentation for discussing sensitive military information.

The Army chief has issued directions for checking cyber invasion by going paperless while discussing sensitive operational issues such as military deployments and war plans, Army sources told PTI here on Monday.

Formations have been told by the Army Headquarters that security of sensitive material would be the responsibility of the commanders, they said.

In recent time, several incidents have taken place where sensitive information has been leaked through cyber hacking including one in Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam.

The armed forces have been regularly issuing directives to their personnel to strictly refrain from putting sensitive information and service-related matters, like location of units or deployment patterns, on social networking sites.

The Army had last year directed all its officers and personnel to even remove their pictures and information showing their affiliation to the service from their personal profiles on social networking sites.

The force has also found that over 70 per cent of the cyber security breaches are taking place due to the use of pen drives and have imposed restrictions on their use by officers and men.

Chinese and Pakistani online espionage agents have also been found indulging in attempts to hack into Indian computer systems over the last several years, the sources said.
