Bargaining by India stalls T-90s tank deal with Russia

Tough bargaining by India has stalled the deal on the purchase of 310 T-90s main battle tanks (MBT) from Russia, which was due to be finalised during Defence Minister George Fernandes' visit to Moscow in June.
The two sides remain divided on the cost of the T90s MBT with Russia demanding 2.12 million US dollars per tank while India is trying to settle it at two million dollars, ITAR-TASS quoted military diplomatic sources as saying.
However, Moscow hopes that differences could be sorted out soon through negotiations and the deal could be signed during President Putin's visit to India in October and the delivery of tanks would be completed latest by year 2004, ITAR-TASS said.
India had decided to buy T90s MBTs from Russia after Ukraine had sold 350 T-84 tanks to Islamabad. In May last year, Russia had sent three T90s tanks for trials in Thar desert and the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir.
