Chandni Chowk cable jumble: NHRC asks officials to act

The dangerous mesh of cables hanging overhead in Chandni Chowk area of the walled city may get some official attention soon with the NHRC asking authorities to take appropriate action on the issue.

New Delhi: The dangerous mesh of cables
hanging overhead in Chandni Chowk area of the walled city may
get some official attention soon with the NHRC asking
authorities to take appropriate action on the issue.

The National Human Rights Commission had recently
directed the Deputy Commissioner of Central District to take
necessary action on a petition which pointed to electrocution
threat from hanging wires as well as water and sewage problems
being faced by residents of the area.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Kotwali) has now forwarded
the NHRC order to the CEOs of BSES and Delhi Jal Board for
appropriate action, official documents show.

The petition filed by advocate R K Tripathy had prayed to
the rights body that the plight of residents of Chandni Chowk
be considered and officials be directed to save them from
plethora of civic problems.

Residents of the congested area have long been
complaining of civic apathy. A redevelopment plan for Chandni
Chowk proposed before the Commonwealth Games also did not take
off.
