New Delhi: Congress’ drubbing in four crucial states in the recent state Assembly elections has had its effect – the clamour for making Rahul Gandhi the party’s prime ministerial candidate for 2014 General Elections has again picked up steam.

While Sonia Gandhi said following the poll results on Sunday that the PM candidate would be announced at an opportune time, party leaders have begun demanding the name be announces immediately.

The first one to make the demand was none other than Rahul Gandhi’s close associate, AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh. He said the top job should go to Rahul and that too at the earliest.

Another young Congress turk, Jyotiraditya Scindia, backed the call for making the Congress vice president the party’s PM candidate, immediately after Assembly election results were declared on Sunday.
The view among Congress leaders is that naming a PM candidate like Rahul Gandhi would provide necessary motivation to party workers ahead of the all-crucial national polls due next May, who feel directionless amid unclear signals from the top leadership.

Rahul himself hasn’t been forthcoming about his PM candidature, expressing continuing faith in the leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh.
