Cong distances itself further from Kalmadi

New Delhi: With party leader Suresh Kalmadi
appearing to be heading for bigger trouble, Congress on Wednesday
further distanced itself from him noting that he was not made
the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee chief for being a
party MP.

"It has nothing to do with the Congress party. Kalmadi
was elected as Chairman of the OC beacuse of being the head of
Indian Olympic Association and not because he was a member of
Congress or Lok Sabha MP from the party," party spokesperson
Shakeel Ahmed told reporters here.
He said leaders of other political parties like Vijay
Kumar Malhotra of BJP and Tarlochan Singh, who was Chairman of
the National Commmission for Minorities, were also associated
with the Organizing Committee.

Asked whether the party feared further embarrassment in
the event of arrest of Kalmadi, the spokesperson said CBI was
looking into the matter and is "free to take its own
course".
"Whoever are responsible and if their complicity is
involved, action will definitely be taken. CBI has the facts
and it knows when to take what action against whom. We should
allow CBI to do its job. CBI will act at the right time," was
his response when asked about the arrest of Kalmadi`s close
aide Lalit Bhanot today.
