Congress hopes Pak will consider releasing Sarabji

Pakistani microbiologist Hanif Chishti was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Monday.

New Delhi: As Pakistani microbiologist Hanif
Chishti was granted bail by the Supreme Court, Congress on Monday
indicated that the release of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian
prisoner who is on death row in Pakistan, on humanitarian
grounds could be an appropriate reciprocal gesture.

Party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters that a
judicial decision should not and cannot be commented on merits
but along with a judicial decision is a humanitarian aspect
and "I think all persons would appreciate and look in a
positive light at the humanitarian aspect."

Noting that one cannot club and compare two or three or
four unrelated cases "but as far as the humanitarian aspect is
concerned, it remains the same whether it is this side of the
border or that side.

"If your indication is towards that humanitarian aspect, I
don`t think anybody a political party or the government,
this side or political party or the government that side, will
quibble about that sentiment", he said replying to questions
on the issue.

Seeking the release of Sarabjit Singh, his family members
had gone to Ajmer ahead of Pakistani President Asif Ali
Zadari`s visit yesterday to dargah of revered Sufi saint
Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.
