New Delhi: Over 50 Congress women workers today staged a protest outside the BJP headquarters here against actress-turned-MP Hema Malini over her "insensitive remarks" on widows.

Carrying a pink sari-draped effigy with the actor's picture, the All India Mahila Congress led by its chief Shobha Oza hit the main road outside the BJP office raising slogans and carrying placards against Malini. The protesters later burnt the effigy.

During a visit to her parliamentary constituency Mathura, Malini stoked a controversy when she said the holy town of Vrindavan, which is home to thousands of destitute women, should not be crowded by widows from other states like West Bengal and Bihar.

She had said that there are already 40,000 widows in Vrindavan, which is part of her constituency, and there was no room to accommodate more.
