Court refuses to grant relief to Abdul Karim Telgi

A Delhi court has dismissed a plea by fake stamp papers scam kingpin Telgi to set aside his punishment of seven years in jail and Rs 50 lakh fine in a case relating to recovery of counterfeit papers on health ground.

New Delhi: A Delhi court has dismissed a
plea by fake stamp papers scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi to
set aside his punishment of seven years in jail and Rs 50 lakh
fine in a case relating to recovery of counterfeit papers on
health ground.

Additional Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma declined to
grant any relief to Telgi who sought leniency on the ground
that he and his wife were afflicted with HIV virus.

"I do not see any ground as to how merely for ill-health
of the accused, mercy be shown to him", the judge said.

The court also took into account the alleged involvement
of the accused in several cases across the country.

"The accused is involved in mass printing of counterfeit
stamp papers through an organised network of operators... In
the process, he affected the revenue of states, the magnitude
and impact of offence by the accused on the people is
unimaginable and it is by all means one of the most deplorable
and heinous crimes," the court said.

Telgi was awarded the jail terms with the fine in the
case after he pleaded guilty before the court on June 11 last
year in the case of recovery of fake stamp papers with face
value Rs 8.35 lakh from Daryaganj here. Six other co-accused
were also awarded differing jail terms with the fine in the
matter.
