Court`s no to any order on diplomat`s charge of harassment

A Delhi court refused to pass any order on an application by disgraced diplomat Madhuri Gupta.

New Delhi: A Delhi court today refused to
pass any order on an application by disgraced diplomat Madhuri
Gupta alleging harassment by the authorities at Tihar jail,
where she is lodged, after the authorities claimed she was
being treated as per jail manuals.

"It is the duty of the jail officials to keep a watch on
the visitors who are coming to meet undertrials and to see
that during interaction no irregularity occurs. They are also
to prevent any article being passed on during the meetings," a
jail superintendent submitted before the Chief Metropolitan
Magistrate Kaveri Baweja.

The jail officials also termed as "false" the harassment
allegations by Gupta.

The court had on August 18 directed the jail
superintendent to appear before it and file a report on the
allegations by Gupta who is facing charges of passing secret
information to Pakistani intelligence agents.

In her plea, 53-year-old Gupta had claimed the jail
authorities permitted her acquaintances, including a servant,
to meet her only at the end of meeting hours and her
conversations are also overheard by prison officials.

"An undertrial also verbally abused me at the instance of
jail officials. She levelled charges which were not even
mentioned in the chargesheet against me," she had alleged in
her hand-written application.

Taking the plea of jail official into account, the court
did not pass any order on the plea of Gupta and disposed of
her application.
