CPI(M) exploring possibility of third front

The CPI(M) is exploring the possibility of a third front, sans the Congress and the BJP, Politburo member Brinda Karat said.

Kumarghat: The CPI(M) is exploring the possibility of a third front, sans the Congress and the BJP, Politburo member Brinda Karat said on Tuesday.

"People have no reliance on Congress and BJP. Resentment on them is on the rise. In such a situation the number of regional parties is increasing and CPI-M is working together with many regional parties. So we are exploring the possibility of a third front minus Congress and minus BJP," Karat told reporters here.

Karat also criticized the Congress-led UPA government for allowing FDI in retail. "Women in the country will be the greatest sufferers because many women are in small businesses in retail markets."

Even though fourteen parties opposed FDI in Parliament, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was adamant to invite Walmart to India which would destroy the economy of the country, she alleges.

"Prime Minister might be able to manipulate parliament, but will not be able to manipulate the people of the country. We will continue to oppose it and launch movements throughout the state so that it cannot be implemented," Karat added.

She alleged that the central government?s plan for direct cash transfer was a ploy to abolish the Public Distribution System for which the common people would suffer.

On the Women`s Reservation Bill, she said "It is just a five minutes walk from Lok Sabha to Rajya Sabha, but after the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha three years ago, it is yet to be sent to the Rajya Sabha. It only proves that the UPA government is inactive and has no political will to pass it."
