Bhopal: Congress leader Digvijay Singh and slain police officer Hemant Karkare did talk just before the Mumbai terrorist attack, sources in the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) here said Monday.

The sources said there was proof to back the claim by the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister that had ignited a huge row.

The sources said a call was made from number 9425015461 to Karkare's number Nov 26, the day of the Mumbai terror attack.

The post-paid mobile number had been issued on behalf of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee and was being used by Digvijay Singh, a general secretary of the Congress.

The BSNL has provided the call details to Digvijay Singh, as he has claimed, the sources said.

The sources spoke in response to a claim by Viswa Hindu Parishad leader B.L. Tiwari that there were no telephone calls between Digvijay Singh and Karkare Nov 26, 2008.

Digvijay Singh had claimed that hours before Karkare was assassinated, he told (Singh) that he feared threats to his life from Hindu extremist organisations.

The remark created a storm. The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) refuted the claim. Mumbai Police also said there were no phone calls between Karkare and the Congress leader on that day.
