New Delhi: Indian Railways regularly monitors quality of food served on trains, Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa informed the Rajya Sabha Friday
Replying to questions, he said the Railways has taken steps to maintain quality of food served on trains. "We are very sincerely and carefully doing the monitoring and
inspection (of food quality)," he said.

Railways, he said, was a vast organisation operating 17,754 trains including 10,385 passenger trains and carrying over 18 million passengers per day throughout the country.

"Phone No. 139 is primarily meant for passenger enquiries pertaining to running of trains and reservation status," he said. "Due to the vastness of the system ordering of food
through this telephone number is not feasible at present."

However, orders for food are taken in running trains and the supply is done from pantry cars or serving stations, he added.
