New Delhi: Government is committed to consider
reservation for minorities as it was mentioned in Congress`
election manifesto and there has been a consistent demand for
it, Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said on Friday.
"Reservation for minorities is a commitment we made in our
manifesto. There has been a consistent demand for it, so
government has the right to consider it and we are considering
it," Khurshid told reporters outside Parliament.
Maintaining that the government must fulfil the promises
it made, he said, "We are elected to do what we promised.
Before the five years are out, we must fulfil our promises."
Khurshid on Thursday had said the government would soon
take a decision on providing reservation for "backward
Muslims" by including them in the 27 per cent OBC quota and a
proposal in this regard would soon come up before Cabinet.
Replying to a query on Team Anna`s demand for including
Group C employees in the ambit of Lokpal, Khurshid said
government is working on it to find the best solution.
"Do not worry on group C, we are still working on it. Best
solution will be found," he said.
The Standing Committee on Law and Justice examining the
Lokpal Bill had recommended exclusion of Group C employees
from the proposed ombudsman`s jurisdiction on the grounds that
the category is the largest component of central government
employees.
It had said that the group with around 57 lakh employees
had a direct interaction with people in general.
