New Delhi: Congress on Monday said government
was doing all it can to get back black money stashed in Swiss
bank accounts as it was an issue of public interest and
concerned the common man.
"It is a matter concerning the government and it is
seized of the matter. It is an issue of public interest and
concerns the aam aadmi (common man). Government is doing all
it can under its jurisdiction," party spokesman Abhishek
Singhvi told reporters here.
The remarks of Singhvi came in the wake of the Swiss
government refusing to share information about Indians holding
accounts in its banks.
Asked what action has the government taken so far to
bring back the black money, Singhvi said the reaction of the
Swiss authorities has come only after action on the part of
the government.
"There are technical, judicial and jurisdictional
limitations..." he said, insisting on the seriousness of the
government on the matter and added every step will be taken to
ensure progress in the matter.
Singhvi said had the government not taken steps, such
response would not have come from there. He said the Prime
Minister and the Finance Minister have given assurance on the
issue.
"It is a technical and legal issue which needs time to be
sorted out," he added.
