New Delhi: In a bonanza of sorts, the central government has announced that all of its employees will be paid the remaining arrears as recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission.

The move will put a burden of over Rs 17,500 crore
on the exchequer.

Government has so far given only 40% of the arrears which were paid during the last fiscal. It has, in a notification, asked the employees to apply for the remaining 60%.

Pensioners will also get their final installment of
arrears. As per the All India Central Government Pensioners Association (AICGPA), there are about 3.8 million central government pensioners- excluding the armed forces.

The recommendations have to be implemented with retrospective effect from January 1, 2006.

"It has now been decided that the remaining 60 per cent
of the arrears may now be paid to the concerned government
servants," said a Finance Ministry`s office memorandum.

The memorandum is, however, silent on the date for
payment of the final installment of arrears.

According to the government calculations, the total
arrears are estimated to cost Rs 29,373 crore to the
government kitty.

The memorandum further said that the government servants
are encouraged to deposit their arrears in general provident
fund (GPF) account.
