Madurai: The Madras High Court today dismissed a batch of petitions seeking permission to hold Jallikaattu or taming the bull sport during temple festivals.
A bench here comprising justices V Ramasubramaniyan and V M Velumani, who examined the petitions filed by 17 people from villages in various districts, including Madurai, Dindigul, Theni and Pudukottai, dismissed them, holding that the Supreme Court had already banned the sport.
On May 7, the apex court had banned using bulls for Jallikattu events or bullock-cart races across the country and hoped Parliament would elevate the rights of animals to that of constitutional rights.
The court had directed governments and Animal Welfare Board of India to take steps to prevent infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animals, saying all living creatures, including animals, have inherent dignity and a right to live peacefully and right to protect their well-being.
