‘Intelligent Transportation System needed’

Road accidents account for thousands of deaths in the country every year.

Mumbai: In view of the chaotic traffic on Indian roads, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) can find a great application for enhancing the road safety in the country, experts believe.

A national conference on Intelligent Transportation System was held in Mumbai recently.

Some of the ITS which can be useful in India are vehicle control- electronic stability control (ESC), lane departure warning system and lane keeping system.

Other road safety systems include fatigue/drowsiness warning system, speed governor, collision avoidance system, intelligent speed adaptation, event data recorder (black box) and vision enhancement (during night, fog), Prof Ashish Verma
of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore said.

Road accidents account for thousands of deaths in the country every year. The planning commission, in 2002, had estimated the social cost of road injuries at 3 percent of the GDP, he said.
