Manmohan Singh not answerable for appointment of judges: Moily

Senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily said that former prime minister Manmohan Singh is not answerable for the appointment of judges.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Tuesday said that former prime minister Manmohan Singh is not answerable for the appointment of judges.

Moily told a news agency, "Giving confirmation is the job of Justice of Madras High Court. Unless there is a recommendation from the Chief Justice it cannot be done. So, even if some enquiry is made by the government, which it is entitled to do, the decision is to be made by the collegiums in respect of the High Court Judges. So why should the Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) explain the appointment of every judge."
Congress leader Kamal Nath said, "The government can have its way but the opposition must have a say and the speaker also needs to be fair. Some parties are feeling that many issues which they want to raise are not given due importance which they deserve."

"We are thinking to calling upon a speaker to express the anxiety in this matter," he added.
Katju had claimed that a district Judge, who had several allegations of corruption against him, was not sacked and was elevated to the post of additional judge of the Madras High Court owing to the pressure put on the UPA Government and the judicial collegium by a Tamil Nadu-based party.
