NBA asks PM not to allow construction of Maheshwar dam

The Narmada Bachao Andolan has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not to review suspension of the Maheshwar dam construction till rehabilitation of affected people despite a request from the Madhya Pradesh government.

of the Maheshwar dam construction till rehabilitation of
affected people despite a request from the Madhya Pradesh
government.

"Instead of taking any steps about rehabilitation, the
Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh has asked the Prime Minister
to cancel the Ministry of Environment and Forest`s(MOEF) order
on false and baseless grounds," the NGO said in a statement.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the NGO appealed to
him not to "let the private project promoters trample on
fundamental and statutory rights of the oustees".

Among the signatories in the letter were the names of
Justice Rajendra Sachar, retired Chief Justice of Delhi
High Court, Kuldip Nayyar, veteran journalist and ex-Member of
Parliament, Surendra Mohan, veteran socialist leader and ex-
Member of Parliament and Swami Agnivesh, President, World
Council of Arya Samaj.

On April 23, the Ministry of Environment and Forest had
issued an order against the private company Shree Maheshwar
Hydel Power Corporation Limited which is implementing the
Maheshwar dam project.
