New Delhi: No data on the exact number of
non-government organisations (NGOs) in the country is
maintained, Parliament was informed on Thursday.
"The exact number of NGOs registered state wise as well
as state wise details of the NGOs are not maintained,"
Minister of State for Planning Ashwani Kumar said in a written
reply to the Rajya Sabha.
He said there were over 31.76 lakh registered societies
in the country in March 2008.
"In India, NGOs/voluntary organisations/non-profit
institutions can be registered as societies, as charitable
trusts or as non-profit companies under central or state
laws," he added.
The scheme for financial assistance to NGOs are
implemented by ministries or departments of the Government of
India and the state governments.
"The requisite information in this regard (financial
assistance) is available with the concerned central
ministries/state governments," the minister said.
