Nuke-liability bill to protect US suppliers: Left

The Left parties Thursday alleged that the civil nuclear liability bill was "directed more towards protecting the nuclear reactor suppliers from the United States and less about the people affected".

New Delhi: The Left parties Thursday alleged that the civil nuclear liability bill was "directed more towards protecting the nuclear reactor suppliers from the United States and less about the people affected".

"The bill displays scant regard for the lives of the Indian people," Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakah Karat said at a press conference here.

Karat was accompained by A.B. Bardhan, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI); Debabrata Biswas (All India Forward Bloc) and Abani Roy (Revolutionary Socialist Party) at the press conference.

The Left leaders appealed to "all those political parties supporting the Bill to reconsider their decision", referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has announced its support for the bill.

Karat said the report of the standing committee on the bill had made changes from the earlier agreed stand. "The printed version of the report has changes which weakens Clause 17 (dealing with liability by foreign nuclear operators) of the bill."
