‘Pentagon for pressure on India to ease tension with Pak’

Washington: The Pentagon is actively lobbying for more pressure on New Delhi to ease tensions between India and Pakistan, the Wall Street Journal has reported. It has also revealed that US President Barack Obama had issued a secret directive to intensify diplomacy towards that aim and to win Islamabad's cooperation in Afghanistan.

Asserting that without detente between the two rivals, US efforts to win Pakistani cooperation in Afghanistan would suffer, the directive in December concluded that India must make resolving its tensions with Pakistan a priority for progress to be made on US goals in the region, the daily said citing "people familiar with its contents".

A debate continues within the administration over how hard to push India, which has long resisted outside intervention in the conflict with its neighbour. The Pentagon, in particular, has sought more pressure on New Delhi, the influential daily said citing US and Indian officials.

The journal cited current and former US officials as saying the discussion in Washington over how to approach India has intensified as Pakistan ratchets up requests that the US intercede in a series of continuing disputes.

The Obama administration has, so far, made few concrete demands of New Delhi, it said citing US and Indian officials.

According to US officials cited by the Journal, the only specific request has been to discourage India from getting more involved in training the Afghan military, to ease Pakistani concerns about getting squeezed by India on two borders.

The directive to top foreign-policy and national-security officials was summarised in a memo written by National Security Adviser James Jones at the end of the White House's three-month review of Afghan war policy in December, the daily said.

According to US and Indian officials cited by the Journal, the Pentagon has emerged in internal Obama administration debates as an active lobbyist for more pressure on India, with some officials already informally pressing Indian officials to take Pakistan's concerns more seriously.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been among the more vocal advocates of a greater Indian role, according to a US military official, encouraging New Delhi to be more "transparent" about its activities along the countries' shared border and to cooperate more with Pakistan.

US military officials were circumspect about what specific moves they would like to see from New Delhi, the Journal said.

But according to people who have discussed India policy with Pentagon officials, the ideas discussed in internal debates include reducing the number of Indian troops in Kashmir or pulling back forces along the border, it said.

The State Department has resisted such moves to pressure India, according to current and former US officials, insisting they could backfire, the Journal said.

It`s time the MoD comes in the hands of the Chief of Staffs, to resist US or anybody else` pressure succesfully. Once, USA was talking about bombing Pakistan to the stone age. What happened to the USA? Do they like terrorist camps better than stones? The USA thinks that since it`s succesfully blackmailed by the Pakis, it can succesfully blackmail India. And with MadMohan at the rear, this possibility is very likely to succeed. We have seen the result lately of the withdrawal of troops from Kashmir: stone-pelting policy, more infiltrations by Paki-terrorists than before, Paki-policy to literally set India in fire by instigating aspirant terrorists to practise and use car-fuel, false accusations on India of water-sharing violation etc. But MadMohan sleeps, doesn`t care, since his child (daughter) is safe in the USA and he himself can flee there whenever he wants. All the Congress-top has children and houses in the USA and thus a safe haven. Then why worry about the comman man?

It`s no surprise to see this article, may be India should ask USA to reduce it`s border patrol along Mexico border to avoid clashes with the drug cartels and avoid tensions with Mexico.Let`s see the look on the US officials.
Let India draw paralle`s between the Mexican drug cartels and Pakistan all purpose smugglers alias hidden terrorists and seek advise as how the US would have dealt?
The Morale of this article is that ``a.if you are hurt YOU need to find a solution for your problem not others``,b.India has to learn from USA how to be self-centered to acheive it`s targets.

India should ask the terrorists camp in Pakistan to be dismantled and insurgency in Kashmir to be stopped by Pakistan. Pakistan must be asked to sign a no first use policy on nuclear armaments. The present border with Pakistan be made permanent.

Obama`s failure in all fields is world known. to save face and to retain some honor he is ready to do tawdry things. Putting pressure on India to pull back or give concession to Pakistan would be more foolish. Defeat of US forces and its drubbing at the International forums bear testimony that no one wants US hegemony. Terrorists are welcome in the world provided they serve US interests. The world should boo-boo US for its dual standards and policies.

Americans would do everything for serving their interests and are least bothered about India or pakistan or Afganistan. They want to get out of the hell where they interfered on their own and for getting out they would want India to patch up with Pakistan irrespective of whether it is right or wrong for their respective countries. India should tread a careful path and should not succumb to pressures from US. USA is no bothered if some Indian lives are lost wherever in the globe but they do not want any Americans to die though they went to Afganisthan on their own in search of osama. They would mess up and leave it to Regional players to sort it out or die. They would just advice through their spokesperson from time to time from Oval office. In the world politics they always play double game . India should talk to Pakistan only when the time is ripe. It is possible they would even ask Inida to handover Kasab to Pakistan but would not allow Headley to be quizzed by Indians. In 26/11 I feel even USA was involved since it is their agent who had done all the spade work.

If the PENTAGON exerts more pressure on India to withdraw more troops from J & K, the People should come out on the street to support the government and the Indian Media along with all the Opposition parties too should stand behind the government Like ONE NATION. Let Obama NOT BUY MORE TROUBLE FOR HIMSELF and the US. Why don`t they pressurise Pakistan to stop terror attacks on India and to abandon the 42 terror training camps to ease the tensions.???

The Americans are deluded to think that they carry any influence over India. Obama seems to be a bigger fool than Bush.
