Police seeks SPP for trial against encounter specialist Sharma

The city police have sought for the appointment of a special public prosecutor (SPP) to conduct the case against encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, arrested in an alleged fake encounter case.

Mumbai: The city police have sought for
the appointment of a special public prosecutor (SPP) to
conduct the case against encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma,
arrested in an alleged fake encounter case.

"We have sought for a dedicated prosecutor considering
the sensitivity and gravity of the case. The notification is
yet to come from Mantralaya," Deputy Commissioner of Police
(DCP) K M M Prasanna told PTI.

Sharma was arrested in January by the Special
Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Bombay High Court, to
probe the case.

Sharma had approached the sessions court seeking bail
stating that he has been falsely implicated in the case and
that the police is fabricating evidence against him.
"Since there are several petitions and cases filed, it
becomes difficult for the police to brief different
prosecutors everytime, which is why we have sought for a
special prosecutor to handle the case," Prasanna said.

The sessions court would hear arguments on Sharma`s
case on February 26.

The case relates to the killing of one Ramnarayan
Gupta alias Lakhan, an alleged associate of gangster D K Rao,
on November 11, 2006 in suburban Versova.

Three constables-Ratnakar Kamble, Tanaji Desai and
Vinayak Shinde and three others have also been arrested along
with Sharma in the case.
