Proposal to rename 4 High Courts after their cities

A proposal to rename four High Courts to mirror the change in the names of the cities where they are located is under the active consideration of the Government.

New Delhi: A proposal to rename four High Courts to mirror the change in the names of the cities where they are located is under the active consideration of the Government.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has received the proposal to change the names of Bombay High Court, Madras High Court, Calcutta High Court and Gauhati High Court to be in line with the present names of the cities by which they are now known.
"The proposal to change the names of `Bombay High Court` as `Mumbai High Court`, `Calcutta High Court` as `Kolkata High Court`, `Gauhati High Court` as `Guwahati High Court` and `Madras High Court` as `Chennai High Court` is under consideration of Government," Ministry of Law and Justice has said in an RTI reply to Subhash Chandra Agrawal.
The ministry said there is no move to rename other High Courts.
