Ghaziabad: The Uttar Pradesh government has
decided to shift the proposed international airport from
Greater Noida to Meerut, a senior official said.

UP`s principal secretary for civil aviation Ravinder
Singh has issued a notification in this regard and invited
bids for appointment of consultants for setting up the
airport.

The project seeks to cater to western UP and Uttarakhand.

Meerut Divisional Commissioner Sarvan Kumar Sharma, also
the chairman of Meerut Development Authority (MDA), said the
airport which was to be set-up at Greater Noida will now come
up at Meerut. The MDA has been appointed the nodal authority
for the project and will provide land for the purpose.

"One airstrip exists at Partapur in Meerut. As one
airport was enough for this area, the small strip will be
lengthened to make it suitable for large jets to land and take
off," Sharma told reporters here yesterday.

He said there can`t be two airports as close to each
other as Meerut and Greater Noida.
