Silchar: At a time when ensuring women’s safety has become a top priority for the government, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has kicked-off a fresh controversy by saying that cases of rapes take place in India and not in Bharat (rural India).

Bhagwat made these remarks in Silchar while addressing a gathering of the RSS workers.

Speaking on the issues concerning women, the RSS chief said, “Such crimes (rapes) hardly take place in 'Bharat', but they occur frequently in 'India'.

The ageing chief of the right-wing Hindu organisation also blamed the western culture and the excessive urbanisation for rising crimes against women.

During his speech, Bhagwat said that those living in urban India are highly influenced with the 'western' lifestyle and culture and this could be one of the reasons for increasing crimes against women.

However, he said that there is no erosion of moral values among those living in the rural India.

"You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gang-rape or sex crimes. They are prevalent in some urban belts. Besides new legislations, Indian ethos and attitude towards women should be revisited in the context of ancient Indian values," Bhagwat was quoted as saying by the media.

The RSS concluded by demanding stringent laws against rape and favoured capital punishment for those convicted of such crimes.

Respected Sir, this is absolutely not true. The western culture never says rape anyone. I don`t hear such cases happening anywhere in the West. We can not hide our flaws by blaming others over it. And about rural india and the women`s rights there. Dont we all know how they are treated there. I have worked in the rural area where women are treated like a household object so if you think taking away the right to live from women is a way to prevent rapes then you are mistaken. And secondly rapes happen as much in number in the rural area just that the local panchayats and bodies are too strong to let those cases become huge plus the women are scared they don`t have the belief in themselves that they can fight for their rights and don`t even get backed by their family members. Sir, you as a learned person should be making intelligent remarks unlike this one in particular.

I support Mr Bhagawat. In my view its a matter of our culture & ethics. Who respect women can never do such things. It is our old age practice to respect women as Mother, Sister etc. But because of influence of Western culture (which taught to enjoy life only) such crimes happens in India (Mostly urban where access to those things are in large). In rural India although such cases happens but in small nos, where age old values still live in large context.

Dear Sir, i Heartly appreciate that u spoke about this topic. but sir there is no difference between urban India and rural India..according to Constitution- INDIA THAT IS BHARAT, not urban or rural. crimes happen every where in India but we have good media and efficient facilities so that we get information about the crimes and all..but in rural india..there is lack of media and facilities and even no proper police power..the police are in dictator position.even many times the refuse to file a case and abuse the victim also..and also try to humiliate the victim.. sir mere dividing India is not sufficient..you are in very Important position do something to make Indian administration batter. nothing happens only by commenting... Please pardon me if i used any wrong statement.. no wrong intention!!!

I dnt agree with this Oldie..Oldies like these encourage the bastards roming out to rape females...What answer does he give for the 45 year old lady raped in Kolkata couple of days back who was coming back home with her husband.. Instead of teaching girls how to dress up n behave, preach the males in ur family to respect the females...not only worship Durga or other devis but to respect real women too.

We strongly condemn any rape at any place, at any point of time, irrespective of caste, community, religion. We never expect such a remark from a great personality of Modern India. This provocate for replying the issue raised here. 1)first let us define what was Bharat and what is India. How these names appared, besides the name Hindu. How the name Hindu was originated? 2)The hindutwavati sangathan must remember the Hindu religious scriptures. Bharata was used to be called as Indica/India by Greeks/Europeans. The geographical location remains invariant whether one call it by Bharata or India . I think RSS Leader was trying to explain the ancient period of India. While talking on ancient India, scriptures says that a) Sati Ahalya was raped by Indra in a pre-planned way, in which Chandra played an important role. b) Sati Talsi was raped by Vishnu again in a planned way. Both the cases were legalized in the name of re-birth theory and Dharma. Let all Indians condemn those acts occurred in ancient India. These two are the cases of celebrities of Bharat, For others there is no record. The astonishing thing is that we never condemn those acts and instead we worship them With these one can make out, which regime was better.

Mohan Bhagwat needs to go live as a woman in rural Bharat/India or anywhere and see for himself the multiple ways in which women and girls are tortured and butchered and violated. We kill our girl babies but worship female Godessess as the most powerful. We a misogynist culture that hates females and the wesh has NOTHING to do with it. Mr Mohan what has the RSS done to make our lives safer? Please don`d bring more shame to India by your ignorant and backward views and comments. Instead stand in solidarity with us to make sure females are born and live healthy productive lives without fear and violence.

I fully endorse what Mr.Bhagwat has said. I also agree with MP , BJP Minister Mr Kailash that women should not cross the Lazman Rekha. In all religions Womens have a very high status but at the same time stress has been laid on a modest living code. No one in India ever has asked a women not to get educated and enjoy freedom. The definition of being ``MODERN `` definetely NOT ``VULGARITY`` . We must all have (men and women) a good thinking which is only and only possible if we do NOT ABANDON our religious teachings and rich MORAL values that we have inherited from our fore fathers . Western Countires have abandoned their religious teaching and are paying high cost for it.
