SC rejects Asaram Bapu's bail plea, says 'no urgency'

In a setback to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected his plea for bail on health grounds.

New Delhi: In a setback to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected his plea for bail on health grounds.

Asaram, 72, was put under arrest after a 16-year-old girl lodged a police complaint in August, 2013 accusing him of sexually assaulting her at his ashram in Jodhpur. He is lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail.

In its order, the apex court said that there was “no urgency” to grant him bail on medical grounds.

The Supreme Court ruled had on August 19 this year directed the constitution of a medical board to examine Asaram Bapu for trigeminal neuralgia, which causes severe headaches to those afflicted with the condition.

The medical board's report was submitted today.

The court had earlier said that his bail will only be considered after all the witnesses in the case have deposed before the trial court.
