Tamil film thespian Shivaji Ganesan, who died in Chennai on Saturday, was cremated on Monday, as thousands of fans, film personalities and leaders of various political parties paid floral tributes to the departed soul.

As a mark of respect to the great film personality, the Tamil film industry remained closed on Sunday.
Shivaji`s actor son Prabhu returned from Switzerland early morning.

The policemen had a tough time in controlling the crowd, which emerged in thousands to get a last glimpse of their filmstar.

Some were seen openly crying even as others consoled them, while others passed by paying their last respects.

Besides numerous film personalities, among those who paid tributes included DMK general secretary K.Anbazhagan, former Union Minister K.V.Thangka Balu and MDMK General Secretary Vaiko.

AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad visited the actor`s residence and placed a wreath on behalf of the party.

Former union finance minister P.Chidambaram also visited Ganesan`s residence.

Earlier, on Sunday morning the body of Ganesan was brought from Apollo Hospital to his T.Nagar residence to enable people to pay homage to the thespian.
