New Delhi: Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh received welcome showers on Monday which brought some relief while the weatherman predicted rainfall in other parts of northern India this week.
In Delhi, the forecast is for generally cloudy skies tomorrow with the chance of rain or thundershowers in some areas as the city grappled with high humidity.
The maximum temperature in the national capital touched 41.6 degrees Celsius, up two notches from yesterday`s 39.8 degrees while the minimum, at 29.6 degrees, was slightly lower than the previous day`s 30.2 degrees.
Light to moderate rainfall brought the mercury down in some parts of Rajasthan where Jaipur registered a maximum of 37 degrees, as against 41.4 degrees recorded yesterday.
However, heat wave conditions prevalent at isolated areas in the north-western parts of the state are likely to continue over the coming 24 hours, weather officials said.
Bakani received 7-cm rainfall while Khanpur and Sangaria, recorded 4-cm showers each. At Ajmer, rain which started in the morning, measured 25-mm by evening.
Certain areas in Himachal Pradesh, on the other hand, received heavy rainfall.
Jogindernagar in Mandi district was the wettest place in the hill state with 101-mm rainfall while Baijnath, Palampur and Kangra were among the other places that received showers.
The rains also increased humidity with the lower hills reeling under sweltering heat as Una recorded a maximum of 40.4 degrees followed by Bhunter at 35 degrees, weather officials said.
The forecast in Himachal is for widespread rain and thundershowers in the lower, middle and higher hills of the state over the coming five days. The MeT office has warned of heavy rains at isolated places from June 12 to 14.
In Uttar Pradesh, light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers at isolated places saw temperatures fall in the Bareilly, Moradabad, Meerut, Faizabad, Lucknow and Gorakhpur divisions.
The hottest place in the state was Jalaun which recorded a maximum of 42.5 degrees.
Although Punjab and Haryana sizzled today in the heat wave, relief may be in sight with the local MeT office hinting at a likelihood of rain lashing the two states by Thursday.
Amritsar was the hottest place in Punjab at 44.8 degrees, followed by 42.6 degrees at Ludhiana. In Chandigarh, the mercury touched 38.9 degrees.
In Haryana, it was Hisar which recorded the hottest temperature in the state at 44 degrees.
The MeT office said dust storms and thunderstorms along with light rain was possible in parts of the two neighbouring states over the coming two days.
