Bhubaneswar: Terming social justice as
the `soul` of Indian Constitution, former Chief Justice of
India R C Lahoti on Sunday said it is a dynamic device to elevate
the status of the deprived section in the society and
mitigate their plight.
"Social justice is a dynamic device to mitigate the
sufferings of the disadvantaged and deprived section of
society and elevate them to the level of equality," he said
delivering the Justice Y V Chandrachud Memorial Lecture on
"Social Justice in Indian Constitution" here.
"Social justice is the soul and conscience of our
Constitution and the true strength and stability of our polity
is society`s credibility in social justice," Justice Lahoti
said in the lecture organised by KIIT Law School.
Asking the people to work with determination and
commitment to remove obstacles in access to social justice, he
said one needs originality of thinking to make effective
contribution to development of social justice jurisprudence.
"All good things which exist are the fruits of
originality," he said adding that Justice Chandrachud had left
indelible imprints of originality of thinking in delivering
landmark judgments on social justice.
Inaugurating the lecture, Orissa Governor M C Bhandare
said social justice is meant for the good of society where
every section, especially the weaker groups, enjoy their
rights and privileges.
