New Delhi: Information minister Ambika Soni
today welcomed the move to reopen the Ruchika molestation
case, in which a former Haryana DGP was given a light
punishment, and said a message should be conveyed that
howsoever big an officer, they should not get any relief in
such crimes.

"I have heard that CBI is addressing the case again. If
Haryana government is reopening it then I welcome this
decision as a woman. I think a message should go across that
howsoever big the officer may be, and whatever be the post, if
they play with any minor`s life then they should not get any
kind of relief," she said while speaking to reporters here.

Former DGP of Haryana S P S Rathore, who molested a
14-year-old budding tennis player Ruchika in 1990, was
sentenced to six month rigorous imprisonment after being found
guilty of the charge, 19 years after the incident.
After the issue was highlighted in media, CPI(M) member
Brinda Karat had also raised it in Rajya Sabha yesterday,
seeking fast track justice in the matter and urging the
government to upgrade the judicial system.
Ruchika had committed suicide in 1993 after being
frustrated by delayed justice and alleged harassment of her
family by the authorities.
