Shillong: Union Minister of State for Home
Ajay Maken has said strict vigil is being maintained along the
Bangladesh border to prevent movement of insurgents.

"All efforts are being made to ensure that law and order
in the North East is not disrupted by anti national elements,"
an official statement quoted Maken as telling Meghalaya Chief
Minister DD Lapang here last evening.

Maken, on a three day visit to the state, said the BSF
have been directed to keep strict vigilance along the
international border.

Lapang called on the Union Minister at Raj Bhavan here
and apprised him of the overall law and order situation in the
state, stating that by and large Meghalaya is very peaceful.

Maken is here to attend an official function at the Assam
Rifles headquarter.

During the brief meeting, Lapang urged Maken to take up
the issue of North East militants with the Bangladesh
Government to ensure that the neighbouring country do not
shelter them in their soil.

Lapang also said that opening of Border Haats (markets)
in different strategic locations along the International
border with Bangladesh is one of the means to uplift the
economic conditions of the people living in the border areas.
