Students protest UPSC results in Delhi

New Delhi: A group of students Sunday staged a demonstration at the capital's Jantar Mantar protesting the Union Public Service Commission's (UPSC) civil service exam preliminary results.

A candlelight vigil was held by the students who alleged that the results were not fair and blamed the commission of corruption.

"Many students with lower scores have made it to the list, while those with higher marks have been left out," said Anurag Tripathi, a PhD scholar from the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi.

The UPSC preliminary exams results were declared last week. The UPSC conducts a three-tier exam yearly for entry into country's higher administrative services.

The students are demanding greater transparency in the procedure of conducting the exam and revelation of the cut-off marks.

"I scored 84 in Geography and 56 in General Studies but my name was not in the list, but I know students with lesser marks who have made it to the list," said Kapil, another student from JNU.

Disclosure of marks and the cut-off has been demanded by students in the past as well. The commission has also rejected Right To Information applications demanding the disclosure of marks.

"We want the UPSC results to be revised. They don't reveal the information in RTI, there is no transparency," said Ashok Kumar, who has done his masters from Jamia Millia Islamia University.

The students also displayed placards and banners and shouted slogans against the UPSC.

mr prithvi various state public service commissions have disclosed the cuttoff marks separately of every optionals.so why such hue and cry by the upsc.upsc and all the public service commissions of the state are established by article 315 of the constitution of india.dear mr prithvi if the upsc is really following the path of transparency and accountability it should disclose the marks obtained by the candidates.but alas its credentials are getting blemished day by day. i would like to convey to mr prithvi that upsc was one of the first such institution to approach the union government to keep it outside the purview of right to information act. and yes there are volumes of testimonies which can not be mentioned here which speaks about the blemish credentials of upsc.

yes their grievances are absolutely true. i want to convey to mr prithvi that upsc has itself created such a contingency to blame rather than praise.how many constitutional bodies in india are working according to the principles and salient features of the constitution. if upsc`s image is of a transparent and accountable body then why should it not disclose the marks obtained by the candidates and tell them all that look here is your marks and that is why you are not ed. but mr prithvi upsc will die-down but will not disclose the marks unless and until the judiciary intervenes in matter. the grievances are genuine mr prithvi. do look at the other side of the story also.

Prithvi -
i think aspirants like kapil(student from jnu) and ashok kumar from jamia millia islamia university should check their answers once again and also learn how to mark the answers on an omr sheet because 84 in geo and 56 in gs is definitely a score above the cut-off.making false claims and blaming a constitutional body without any evidence is wrong.upsc can`t release the cut off marks because they differ for every optional subject.the optional subject chosen by more number of candidates will have comparatively low cut off marks.
