New Delhi: A suspected associate of top
Maoist leader Kobad Ghandy, arrested from Kanpur by Uttar
Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad was on Friday sent to 10 days police
custody by a Delhi court.

Arvind Joshi was today brought to the national capital
in compliance with a production warrant issued against him.

Joshi was produced before metropolitan magistrate Ashu
Garg who sent him to police remand till March 29.
Seeking custodial remand, city police contended that
the accused had slipped away with the hard disk of the laptop
seized from the possession of Ghandy when he was arrested here
on September 20 last year.

Police also claimed the accused acted as key
facilitator for Ghandy in establishing a Maoist base in the
capital city and also helped him procure fake identity card
and PAN card.

Meanwhile, the court extended the judicial custody of
Ghandy till April three.

On February 19 the city police had chargesheeted
Ghandy, accused of trying to set up a network of the banned
outfit here, under the stringent Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act, besides booking him for various offences
under the IPC relating to cheating, forgery and impersonation.

In its over 700-page chargesheet, the police had
alleged 63-year-old Ghandy and his associates were trying to
build a Maoist corridor in the national capital.
The investigators, who claimed to have recovered a
fake voter identity card and pan card from Ghandy, had also
referred to a CD in which he was allegedly addressing armed
cadres of the banned organisation.

Ghandy, an ideologue and a think-tank of the outfit,
has been booked for various charges under the Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act.

An alumni of the prestigious Doon School, Ghandy was
said to be part of the top leadership of erstwhile CPI-ML
(People`s War Group) from 1981 and continued as a Central
Committee member in CPI (Maoist). He was elected to its
Politburo in 2007.
