Toilets more important than temples: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi: Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh has created a controversy by saying that toilets are more important than temples in India.

Addressing a gathering of Panchayat-level workers on Friday, Ramesh said as per The Indian Express, “Sixty-four percent of Indians defecate in open spaces, which is a global record. It is now reckoned as the main cause of India’s malnutrition problem.”

Praising the sanitation model of Hivre Bajar and Ralegan Siddhi, the Union Minister said every village in the country should replicate such model.

The BJP today hit out at Ramesh for his comment, saying he should not make such statements which hurt the "fine fabric of faith and religion" in the country.

“Making of toilets and having faith in a religious place of worship are two different things. India is a multicultural country where we should have unblemished faith in a temple, a mosque, a gurdwara or a church. You cannot juxtapose the two," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He alleged Ramesh has made a political statement here and advised him to instead concentrate "salvaging the battered image of the UPA government".

Congress also appeared to disapprove of the Rural Development Minister’s comment saying "we respect the sanctity of every religious place".

“We respect the sanctity of every religious place irrespective of the community it belongs to. I do not know the statement attributed to Ramesh. Perhaps it could have been distorted and he is in the best position to explain."

"Congress party believes in sarvadharmasambhav. Equal respect for all religions. Equal respect for all religious places", party spokesman Manish Tewari said reporters.

It is a pity that our country is far behind in providing sufficient toilets particularly in the rural areas. It is also a fact that the sentiments of the people are misused and temples are coming up even on small pieces of land measuring 3’x4’. Building temples has become a commercial venture these days. A person donning saffron clothes with ‘vibhuthi’ or other paste becomes a sage. Gullible people are exploited. A number of such small temples can be found even in important cities. Money one can earn by such ventures becomes the only criteria. Temples therefore, should not be allowed to be constructed without proper arrangements and facilities. Of course, in a country like ours this problem cannot be casually addressed. To an extent I am with Shri Jairam Ramesh. At the same time he has erred in clubbing these two problems together. He should understand that this is India and sentiments play a dominant role in our country.

Pity that we have lost the sense to understand and appreciate forceful statements in cases which need imminent social concern.and use of individual Household toiletshas not entered into the sensibility and culture of our people in spite of increasing subsidies to the poor andidendified APL families in rural areas. Still it`s a question of behaviour change which demands a network of social, cultural, economic and individual values. How nmuch is the loss economically and in human resource can be assessed ithrough a cursory glance of the data and evidencesavailable. What`s wrong in the statement of Jairam Rameshji. Don`t we often say that parents are above everything and where they are more than a temple. Temple here stands for higher values and not the building. If some concern is to be stressed as a noble value, it is quiet common to underpin it using temple imagery. Are the terms ``God``, `` Temple`` and other worshipping places prerogatives of a few sections ?God might have pleased with Jairam Ramesh, the MInister with commitment for the cause he stands for. Ms. Sunder``Church and temple and chuch

Sonia`s crony... If you have the guts tell ``toilets are better than mosques, churches gurudwaras, I will respect your honesty.

toilets are used to clear out physical garbage. temples are helpful to us in clearing our mental garbage. so it is inappropriate to say that toilets are more important.
