New Delhi: This Bakri-Eid, tech-savy Muslims can save both their time and money as goats are now being sold online on e-tailing websites such as OLX, Quiker.

Classified advertisement of hundreds of beautiful and '100% organic grass' goats have been posted with photos and details of the breed such as age, weight, height and the vaccination and deworming status.

Traders ask the buyers to check the animals while some of them offer discounts and free home delivery too if the goats are booked before a certain date.

Ali Jawad Moontasir from Byculla said he had put up the online ad after he saw similar ones last year. “I liked the idea. The exotic breeds cost anywhere between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh, so we can’t keep them in the disease-prone Deonar abattoir, where hundreds of animals die of illness,” said Moontasir.

Every year for the festival, around three lakh goats are brought to the Mumbai city’s Deonar abattoir from states such as Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, Aslam Qureshi, president of the All India Sheep and Goat Breeders and Dealers Association, was quoted as saying by an English daily.

“But, traders have started selling goats through their farms, as the abattoir is in poor condition. It’s difficult to say when, but the e-market for goats is set to get a boost soon, he added.”

Currently, around 2,000 goats are up for sale online and traders are hopeful that the trend will pick up in a big way in the next few years.
