Music streaming service Spotify gets lyrical

Spotify will be launching a second playlist ‘hits' over the next seven days for those with a short attention span.

The world's most popular music streaming service has teamed up with musical knowledge service Genius to add a new level of immersion to the listening experience.

Soon, when you load up a new playlist in your account, as well as listening to songs, you'll be able to see the lyrics and the story behind them, plus other insights and anecdotes form the people behind the hit.

Something that used to require logging on to Rap Genius.

That's the future vision, but initially, the service, which goes live Tuesday, will be contained within a single Behind the Lyrics (Hip Hop) playlist, which is only fitting as the Genius service started out simply trying to catalogue and understand rap songs but soon exploded into the biggest crowd-sourced database of all things music trivia.

Three of the artists featured in the initial playlist -- Pusha T, Tinashe and Diplo -- have also agreed to add their own background and stories to their tracks especially for Spotify users.

"Spotify and Genius are creating a really cool connection between me and my fans on another level than I normally can connect with them," says Tinashe. "Not only are they able to hear the music and see the lyrics, but they are also able to understand where I was coming from when I wrote them and kind of get inside my head, which is really cool."

Although the information on the songs in the initial playlist is fluid and being added to constantly, Spotify will be launching a second playlist ‘hits' over the next seven days for those with a short attention span.

However, for the moment at least the new Behind the Lyrics feature is only available to Spotify users accessing the service via an iPhone 5 or later.
