Sydney: Australian Internet users have between five and fifty online passwords, and create false identities to maintain their privacy in the virtual world.
A new report by the Australian Communications and Media Authority shows Australians are adopting more varied strategies to keep their information safe online, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
According to the report, 65 percent of those surveyed said that they were managing between five and 50 online passwords, while 51 percent said it was becoming difficult to manage multiple passwords.
The report highlighted three common online identities, which included social networking, such as Facebook; transactional, such as banking sites; and professional, such as LinkedIn.
Professional profiles were the most edited and carefully constructed identities, while social networking identities were less inhibited, showing personal views, the report added.
4 out of 10 respondents said they had deliberately provided inaccurate information about themselves to protect their online identity.
