New Delhi: The Centre Monday indicated that
ULFA leader Anup Chetia`s is unlikely to be handed over to
India by Bangladesh very soon as a court there was still
hearing a case related to him.

Home Minister P Chidambaram said the position related to
Chetia, who has been in the custody of Bangladesh since 1997,
remained unchanged.

"I think there is no change in the position. He is now in
Bangladesh, under some kind of custody. Therefore, as far as
we are concerned, there is no change in the position," he said
when asked how soon the ULFA general secretary would be handed
over to New Delhi by Dhaka.

43-year-old Chetia, who was arrested on December 21, 1997
in Dhaka for illegally entering Bangladesh and possessing two
forged passports of that country, has completed his prison
term.

However, his application seeking political asylum in the
neighbouring country was still being heard by a court in
Dhaka, delaying the process of his handing over to India by
Bangladesh.
