Gangtok: Slamming the Sikkim government for
the high rate of school dropout, Congress on Tuesday said it
reflected `very poorly` on the state`s commitment to promote
education and encourage enrolment in primary schools.
``It is egg on the face of the Pawan Kumar Chamling
government,`` Sikkim PCC general secretary Kunga Nima Lepcha
said quoting the Union Human Resources Development department
report stating Sikkim has the second highest school dropout
cases at 85 per cent just after Bihar.
The Centres report painted a sorry picture, he said in a
statement and demanded that the state government bring out a
white paper on it.
The Chamling government had claimed to have transformed
the education sector to develop Sikkim as a breeding ground
for skilled manpower and had been receiving central grants
under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan over the years, he said.
Lepcha also flayed various organizations which have
awarded Sikkim for its achievements and questioned the
yardstick for consideration of various claims of the state
government.
