Guwahati: One person was killed as heavy
rains lashed various parts of Assam for the sixth consecutive
day today, disrupting normal life and triggering flash floods.

A man was killed during the day when lightning struck him
while he was working in a paddy field at Bamunjhari village in
Morigaon district, official sources said.

There were flash floods in both urban and rural areas of
the state, they said. Several areas of Guwahati were
waterlogged since yesterday throwing vehicular traffic out of
gear.

The MeT department predicted heavy rains in several parts
of the state in the next 24 hours accompanied by gusting wind.

The state experienced a severe storm followed by
incessant rains since the onset of the Rongali Bihu or
Assamese New Year celebrations on April 14 dampening the
festivities.

Four persons, including a woman, were in a storm in
Dhubri district on April 14.

Organisers of several Bihu functions had to cancel their
programmes due to heavy rains.

Pre-monsoon showers, locally known as `Bordoichila`, are
common this month, but it has been particularly heavy this
year.
