New Delhi: In the wake of the murder of a
top Gorkha leader in Darjeeling, the government on Friday asked
people living in the hill town and its surrounding areas to
maintain peace and work for the resolution of the Gorkhaland
issue.
"There is a need for people to be calm and work for
the peaceful resolution of Gorkhaland issue. All sides must
maintain peace," Home Secretary G K Pillai told reporters
here.
All India Gorkha League (AIGL) president Madan Tamang
was stabbed to death by unidentified men during clashes with
rival Gorkha groups in Darjeeling.
"It is a very unfortunate incident. Such incidents
vicious the atmosphere," Pillai said, adding the situation is
tense but under control.
Official sources said the murder may delay the
proposed tripartite talks on Gorkhaland issue, scheduled to be
held later this month.
The Home Ministry is in constant touch with West
Bengal government and taking stock of the situation in
Darjeeling.
Around 300 additional CRPF personnel have also been
deployed in the hill town to assist the local police as a
precautionary measure.
