Aizawl: Mizoram is facing acute shortage of pork, staple diet of the Mizos, and the government is making efforts to increase its production following death of large number of pigs due to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS).
The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department will give 50 per cent subsidy to those who are rearing swines for breeding and utmost care would be given to ensure that such swines are free from disease to increase pork production, Veterinary Department Director L B Sailo said today.
Bio-security measures would be undertaken in Kolasib and other districts not yet infected by the dreaded PRRS to ease the acute shortage of pork in the state, he said.
"Sero surveillance would also be taken up in as many places as possible for which Elisa Test Kits would be procured as precautionary measure against PRRS," he said.
PRRS, spread in the state by pigs imported from neighbouring Myanmar, infected swines in Mizoram during March-April last year killing hundreds of pigs while 243 pigs were culled.
