Over 2,500 children not enrolled in Mizoram schools, minister

2,665 children between the age of 6 - 14 were not enrolled in schools in Mizoram, state school education minister H Rohluna informed the Assembly on Thursday.

Aizawl: 2,665 children between the age of 6 - 14 were not enrolled in schools in Mizoram, state school education minister H Rohluna informed the Assembly on Thursday.

While the southernmost Lawngtlai district has the highest number of children without formal education at 1,201 followed by south Mizoram's Lunglei district at 580, Aizawl district has the lowest number of children without formal education at 67, the minister said in a written reply to a query from Lalrinawma of the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF).

He said that the school education department, under the SSA Mission established Residential Special Training Centres and the Non-Residential Special Training centres, would ensure imparting of non-formal education to such children.

An Education department official told PTI there were parents belonging to some religious sects who refused to enrol their children in schools and repeated appeals to those parents were not yielding results because of their strong religious belief.
