Singh would inaugurate the newly-built assembly house at
Capital Complex here on July 22.
A letter from Prime Minister`s Secretariat confirmed
that he is scheduled to arrive here on July 22 in the morning
and inaugurate the structure built at the cost of Rs 9 crore,
official sources said today.
Ujjyanta Palace, the royal palace of the erstwhile
Manikya Kings has been used till date as the assembly house.
King Radhakishore Manikya Bahadur built the palace in
1901 at a cost of Rs 10 lakh despite financial constraints.
When the Kingdom of Tripura merged with India in 1949,
royal properties were nationalised and Ujjayanta Palace was
converted as the state legislative building.
When All Tripura Tribal Force (ATTF) signed an
agreement with Left Front Government in 1988, they made it a
point that the palace would be a museum where heritage and
culture of tribals of the state who constitute one third of
the population would be showcased.
Ujjayanta Palace compound covers an area of
approximately one sq km. The main block covers 800 acres
comprising public halls such as Throne room, Durbar hall,
library and reception hall.
The neoclassical palace was designed by Sir Alexander
Martin of Messrs Martin & Co.
The Chinese Room is particularly notable, the ceiling
of which was crafted by artisans brought from China. The
two-storey palace has three large domes, the largest of which
is 86 ft (26 m) high from the ground, a four-storey central
tower rests on the top of the palace.
