BJP leader arrested in Odisha

BJP leader and former mayor of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) Siba Shankar Das was arrested for allegedly attempting to murder a person eight months ago.

Berhampur: BJP leader and former mayor of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) Siba Shankar Das was arrested for allegedly attempting to murder a person eight months ago.

Das was taken to custody on Thursday night.

"We are in search of Das for some days. He was arrested from here, when he was on move," said SP (Berhampur) Sarthak Sarangi.

Das was allegedly involved in a case of attempt to murder by running his car on a man on June 27, 2014.

His anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Supreme Court. He is now a corporator in the BMC.

The former mayor had resigned from the ruling BJD just before the Assembly Election after being denied a party ticket to contest from Berhampur segment.

He later joined the BJP and unsuccessfully contested from Berhampur segment in BJP ticket.

"Since Das joined in BJP, the government wants to put him in trouble and harass in false cases. His arrest is nothing but a political vendetta," said senior BJP leader and former deputy speaker of state Assembly Rama Chandra Panda.
