Chandigarh: A special CBI court here on Saturday
sentenced former Punjab IAS officer Bikramjit Singh to two and
a half years of imprisonment in a graft case.
Special CBI Judge Darshan Singh also imposed a fine of Rs
30,000 on him.
Singh, who had remained closely associated with Akali Dal
leader Parkash Singh Badal`s family in the run up to the 1997
elections and was later appointed Badal`s principal secretary,
was held guilty on graft charges by the court on April 29.
A case was registered against Singh for allegedly
amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of
income in 1997 on an anonymous complaint.
CBI sleuths had raided his house in the city and his two
Shop-cum-Office (SCO) complexes in 1997.
A chargesheet was filed against him on January 25, 2002,
after getting nod from the Central Government.
In its chargesheet the CBI had stated that the officer
had luxury cars, accounts in different banks and agriculture
and commercial property in Chandigarh and also in Punjab.
Singh, a 1973-batch IAS officer, had a wealth to the
tune of Rs 54 lakh which was disproportionate to his known
sources of income as per the CBI chargesheet.
Meanwhile, Singh has been released on bail after
furnishing a bond of Rs one lakh so that he can approach the
higher judiciary within a month.
