Punjab, Haryana continues to reel under intense cold wave

Intense cold wave continues unabated in most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh today with mercury plummeting up to three degrees Celsius below normal, adversely affecting normal life.

The minimum temperatures hovered between one to three degrees Celsius below normal in the plains of Punjab and Haryana, the MeT office said here.

Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place with a low of 0.8 degrees Celsius. While Amritsar settled at a low of one degree Celsius, two notches below normal, the minimum temperature at Hisar was 3.4 degrees Celsius, also two notches below normal.

Among other places, Narnaul reeled under a low of 3.5 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal followed by four degrees Celsius at Ludhiana, three notches below normal and 4.6 degrees Celsius at Patiala, one notch below normal.

Chandigarh had a low of 5.4 degrees Celsius whereas Ambala settled at a low of 7.5 degrees Celsius. Besides, several parts of Punjab and Haryana, including Hisar, Amritsar, Patiala, Bathinda, Narnaul, Ludhiana and Rohtak remained engulfed under a thick blanket to fog adversely affecting normal life.

Several trains criss-crossing the region ran hours behind schedule due to low visibility in the wake of foggy conditions, officials said.
Besides, frequent tripling of power supply at some parts of Punjab and Haryana compounded the problems of the people.
The MeT forecast foggy conditions and drop in night temperatures in the region during the next 24 hours.
